Benefits

Designed and maintained by the team behind the prestigious Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, the accuracy and authority of the content is second to none.

Complete cartographic feature coding gives you enormous flexibility when designing maps for display on screen or for output as printed maps. For example, over 30 different types of road are identified, while the coding for rivers models their relative importance both between and within drainage basins.

Boundaries are rigorously checked and verified in order to give an accurate picture of World political geography as it is today. First order internal administrative divisions are included for more than 120 countries, while the gazetteer adds even more first order qualifiers as well as including second order and physical island qualifiers for many entries.

The rich feature coding also supports complex GIS applications, where detailed knowledge of the earth’s surface is required.

Vertical integrity between content in different layers is maintained. For example, towns have roads going to them meaning that you can not only find a place, but how to get there as well.

Suitable Uses

There are many possible uses of the World Premium dataset, these include...

  • High end cartographic production
  • Reference mapping
  • GIS
  • World placename querying
  • Web mapping
  • Multimedia applications

Data Layers

Layer Layer Type Description
AdmA Administrative polygon layer Polygons representing administrative areas. Includes admin division name and ISO/FIPS codes.
AdmL Administrative linework layer Administrative boundaries, mostly to 1st order internal admin divisions. Includes the coastline.
AirP Airports point layer Points representing international and regional airports.
ContA Contour polygon layer Polygons representing height bands for map layer colouring. Height bands in metres.
ContL Contour linework layer Contour lines. Heights are in metres.
DesA Desert polygon layer Polygons representing desert areas and lava flows
DistP Distance point layer Points representing road distance markers and road distances (in kilometres, except USA which is in miles).
DrtL Drainage text linework layer Cartographically-placed arcs showing river names.
HtsP Heights point layer Points representing features with height, e.g. mountain summits, volcanoes.
LnsL Linear linework layer Miscellaneous linear features, e.g. pipelines, walls, reefs
NpkA National Park polygon layer Polygons representing national parks.
NunA Nunatak polygon layer Polygons representing areas covered by nunataks.
ParkP Park points layer Points representing national parks, nature reserves or regional parks that are too small at mapping scale to show as polygons.
PtsP Point features layer Miscellaneous point features.
RdsL Road linework layer Roads, classified by status.
RdsP Road point layer Points representing features associated with roads. Road numbers are included on this layer to assist with their cartographic placement for map production purposes.
ResA Reserve polygon layer Polygons representing nature and ethnic reserves. Includes some regional parks in North America.
RfsL Railways linework layer Railways and ferry routes.
RfsP Railway point layer Points representing features associated with railways or ferries.
TwnP Towns point layer Towns, coded by status (administrative capital, national to 4th order) and by their population band. Each town is also attributed with the country and administrative division it falls within, if known.
TxtL Text linework layer Cartographically-placed arcs representing curved map text, e.g. area names, mountain ranges, water features.
TxtP Text point layer Cartographically-placed points representing map text, e.g. area names, mountain ranges, water features.
UrbA Urban area polygon layer Polygons representing urban areas.
WatA Water polygon layer Polygons representing water features, e.g. lakes.
WatAL Water area linework layer Outlines of polygons representing water features, e.g. lakes.
WatL Water linework layer Linear drainage features, e.g. rivers and canals. Glacier ‘form’ lines are included on this layer to enhance the cartographic representation of glaciers. Rivers are classified by tributary (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Other) and by closeness to the sea (A, B, C, D with A being at river mouth, D being at river source). Canals, aqueducts, and wadies are classified by importance (A, B or C).
WatP Water point layer Points associated with drainage features.
